On March 30, 2025, at 12:55 p.m., the Oregon Area Fire/EMS District and Auto-Aid companies were dispatched to a structure fire in the 800 block of Oregon Center Drive. Multiple callers to the Dane County Communications Center reported that a building was on fire, with visible smoke. The first arriving engine company found a two-story multi-family structure with no smoke present. Upon gaining entry to the apartment, firefighters located a kitchen fire that had been extinguished by an activated sprinkler head. Fire damage was limited to the wall and cabinetry, with associated smoke and water damage. One occupant was injured in the incident but was not transported to the hospital.
The Oregon Area Fire/EMS District would like to emphasize the importance of automatic sprinkler systems, especially in residential settings. In this incident, the rapid rise in heat activated the sprinkler head, which immediately extinguished the fire. This not only prevented significant property loss but also ensured the safety of all occupants. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) advocates for the widespread use of residential fire sprinklers due to their proven effectiveness in saving lives and protecting property. Because of the sprinkler system’s activation in this multi-family building, no occupants were displaced as a result of the fire.
