Press release

Hawkinson Road Brush Fire

Published: January 29, 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On January 28, 2025 at approximately 2:30 pm, the City of Stoughton Fire Department and the Oregon Area Fire/EMS District responded to a report of a field that was on fire in the 2000 block of Hawkinson Road in the Township of Dunn. The first arriving unit on the scene found multiple acres of grass and wooded area on fire. The fire was fully extinguished after two hours using fire apparatus that included three brush trucks and two UTV’s. It is estimated that a total of 50 acres of field and wooded area were affected by fire during this incident.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our concern for the current weather and geography conditions. This winter season has produced less than average precipitation via snow or rain. As a result, fields and wooded areas are extremely dry thus creating a higher fire danger than we would expect this time of year. There have been numerous brush fires around the state recently, which is much earlier than expected. While many do not consider the winter time to be a dangerous time of year for burning, we would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the following:

  • Know your township ordinances and regulations for burning.
  • Ensure that all set fires are attended to at all times.
  • Do not burn prohibited materials.
  • Do not burn when wind speeds exceed 15 mph.
  • Whenever in doubt, contact your local fire department.

The OAFED would like to extend their sincerest appreciation to the City of Stoughton Fire Department for their assistance with the incident.
