OAFED provides EMS care at the EMT-Paramedic level of care. The primary response ambulance is staffed by a crew that responds immediately from the station, or wherever the crew may be at any given time. Using staffing from the on-duty fire crews and interns, the reserve ambulance responds when there are multiple incidents within the fire district at the same time. In addition to the primary response area within the fire district, EMS services are provided to neighboring communities within Dane County, and Green and Rock Counties to the south.
Single Paramedic resources provide the exact same care that dual Paramedic resources provide. The advantage of a single Paramedic system is that it affords opportunities for EMT-Basic and Advanced-EMTs to operate at a more comprehensive level. Our focus at the OAFED is to train all of our emergency medical technicians to think clinically and critically at the highest level to provide excellent pre-hospital care. Our Paramedics rely heavily on their partners to assist with whatever injury or illness a patient may present with.
The goal of the OAFED is to ensure that EMTs of all licensure levels have a place to learn and grow as EMS professionals and as individuals.
Medical Direction is provided by SSM Health and Madison Emergency Physicians (MEP). Dr. Kacey Kronenfeld has been OAFED’s medical director since 2017. Dr. Kronenfeld also serves as the Medical Director for Dane County in collaboration with Dane County EMS, and the Dane County 911 Center. Dr. Kronenfeld brings with her an excellent staff from the SSM Health EMS Training Center. The training center staff provides monthly EMS training, and continuing education opportunities for BLS, ACLS, ACLS-EP, and PALS, along with monthly presentations in addition to the basic needs of the department. The training center has a robust training program that includes an ambulance module for real-life simulations using high-fidelity adult, pediatric, and infant manikins to ensure that providers are being trained to the highest standard.
