On October 20, 2024, at 8:54 a.m., the OAFED was alerted to a structure fire in the 400 block of East Lincoln Street in the Village of Oregon. Upon arriving at the scene, Engine 2 found a single-story home with active fire conditions in the attached garage and on the roof. Crews immediately proceeded with fire suppression activities to extinguish a garage fire that had extended into the attic space. With the initial report of the fire involvement, a MABAS Box Alarm was requested to bring additional resources to the scene.
The fire was knocked down in less than 30 minutes from the time of the call. Crews spent time on scene ensuring that smoldering fires were extinguished and protecting the homeowners’ possessions. Preliminary estimates of structure and content loss are at $200,000. Two occupants and three pets were displaced as a result of the fire. They were assisted on scene by the American Red Cross.
Assisting at the scene were fire and EMS agencies from Belleville, Brooklyn, Fitchburg, Fitch-Rona, Maple Bluff, McFarland, Stoughton, and Verona. The OAFED would also like to thank the Village of Oregon Police Department, Alliant Energy, and the Dane County Communications Center for their assistance in this incident.
With October being Fire Prevention Month, the OAFED would like to remind everyone to ensure that your homes have working smoke detectors and to change your batteries twice per year. We recommend that homeowners have fire extinguishers available in their homes. We highly recommend that charging systems not be left unattended. This includes cell phone chargers, battery chargers, or automotive charging units. When not in use or in doubt, any type of charging unit or cord should be unplugged from the outlet.
